I don't think 6 months is too old. You can put any kind of safe bedding in the litter pan, as long as it's different from what the rest of the cage is. |

While there are some people lucky enough to have a pig who tends to do his or her business mostly in one spot, I don't think that most cavies can be "litter box trained" in the same way that, say, ferrets, rabbits, and even rats can be. You might be able to convince them to pee in mostly one spot, but they're going to poop pretty much whereever they feel like doing so. A lot of people have success with putting all the food-stuffs (hay, veggies, pellets) in one area of the cage (like a "kitchen", since they tend to pee and poop while they're eating, which can help. |

My piggies are potty trained. Mostly what i did was, i got a litter pan and put care fresh shavings in it, since my bedding is fleece it is different from it. Also i put their poop in there every time they poop outside of the litter box. The best thing is they pee in their all the time and poop also. With them peeing inside the litter saves me from a lot of stinking with the fleece. they like to poop where they sleep a little but thats not a problem i clean that like around twice a day. So to wrap things up with my 2 piggies being litter train they poop and pee in the pan and poop a little bit in their hide. I hope this helped |

Mine are 2yrs old. Is there hope for them? We just got them yesterday, but so far they're 'going' all over the cage. Could it just be nerves from a new environment? |

I've bought a litter pan before and filled it with Aspen or Carefresh bedding but they did not pee or poop in it. I'm off to buy some Yesterday's News litter and try it to see if it works. Hopefully I'll have good luck, but i will be just thankful if they pee in it. |

I've tried litter training my piggies as well and I gave up. I now use an Itso brand plastic tray from Target with sides low enough for the piggies to get in but high enough to keep litter in, under my hay rack. The best solution I've found is to line it with paper towels and then add some Yesterday's News. I put a little hay on top for softness. They don't use this as their only pottying area but it does cut down some on mess on my fleece since they're often at the hayrack. I empty it once a day, sometimes every other day. The towels keep the mess above them and it's easier to just throw in the trash. Last edited by hilary; 04-14-09 at 01:13 pm. Reason: needed to add more |
