Yes New cage on the way!

I am so excited. My husband just went online this morning and ordered the 2x4 cage for our two girls. They have been in the extra large pet store cage and he knew I wanted to get them something bigger. I'll be using aspen shavings in their cage. Anyone have any tips for making the cleaning easier? I've never had a cage with coroplast (hope I spelled that right) before.

Re: New cage on the way!

I don't use aspen but when you clean the coroplast it's great to use a 1/2 water 1/2 white vinegar solution as it's non-toxic and great at neutralizing the urine. You might already use that in your current cage. I use fleece as it's the cheapest bedding to maintain and easy for me to clean. You might look into alternate bedding once you get settled in with the cage. Good Luck and I'm glad you have a nice cage comming.

Good for you! My 2 x 4 is on the way also! What color did you get? Mine is black on black.

I will probably be using fleece as their bedding because from what I've gathered, using fleece will minimize the amount of clean up, though you have to do a fair amount of laundry, I imagine.

Re: New cage on the way!

I tried fleece for a few months and my piggies did NOT like it at all. They pouted and hid in their pigloo a lot more. So I switched back to aspen and they week weeked at me and did laps. The problem I have is that in the corners, where they pee the most, there seems to be a buildup from the shavings. I've used brushes, scrub sponges, steel wool and nothing seems to work. I think the plastic is porus and that is the problem, does the coroplast do this?

Re: New cage on the way!

If you put straigt vinegar on the corner stains and let it sit, it should take it up. It's most likely from their urine. With the fleece it probably get nasty really fast in a small cage. Since I have a big cage the fleece doesn't get nasty at all assuming I do my spot cleanings. If I didn't spot clean they wouldn't like it much.

Re: New cage on the way!

I'll try that. Thanks! I am so excited!! I got a little hand broom and dust pan after I saw someone mention it on here. Cleaned their cage with it last night and it was so easy. I had been using a litter scoop and it took forever. I don't know why I didn't figure this out a long time ago. Depending on space we might attach their old cage to the new one to create 2 rooms for them. We'll have to see how the space works out though.

Re: New cage on the way!

The cage came in today! I was home sick today so luckily I was here when it was delivered. I cannot wait for my husband to get home so we can put it together and get a lid for it. Yay!

It was so easy to put together. I lucked out and ours came when hubby was home. He even made the cover. I bet it took us less than an hour do get it all done and set up.

Re: New cage on the way!

I've got husband and brother in law here (he's staying for the week) so I can sit back while they put it together. Of course I'll have the directions to advise them since I know they won't look at them on their own.

Re: New cage on the way!

Good Luck!! It'll be fun to watch your piggies once you put them in there.

In regards to attaching the old pet store cage. You could always do that for a kitchen area. You can find a ton in the gallery. That way you won't feel like you've wasted it.

Re: New cage on the way!

We just finished putting it together and husband and brother in law are headed to Home Depot for lid materials. I'm hoping they have black shelving so it will match the grids. I cannot believe how big it is! I'll post some pictures when it is all done and the girls are in it.

Re: New cage on the way!

The piggies are now in their C&C cage!! I had a little trouble fitting their water bottle in and their glass one was too big with the lid but they're loving it already. They have gone from their food to their house several times and then they seemed to notice there was another half a cage to see. I'm letting them settle in a bit now, then I'm going to give them some veggies. I plan on getting another water bottle soon so they'll each have one of their own. I'll post pics soon!

Re: New cage on the way!

Pictures of the old cage my girls were in and the new C&C cage are now in the gallery under closed cages. I am so thrilled!! I feel like a much better piggy mom now. I gave them their kale and carrot ball and some parsley and dark leaf lettuce and they dug right in so I think they feel at home. They already seem to be staying out of their hut more. Would having more space make them more confident?
