Question Need help with cage setup

Hello. I have a post further down that explains how our two pigs just don't get along anymore. We've decided to just keep them seperated until they get a little older. They are currently residing in a 2x5 C&C cage with a divider down the middle, essentially giving them each a 2x2.5 cage. I would like to give them both more room, but space is limited. I was thinking of building them each a 2x4 with one on top of the other, but then they can't see each other. As much as they don't get along when they can get at each other, I think they would probably get lonely if they couldn't at least see the other. Am I wrong about this? I've tried looking through literally hundreds of pictures on this site of everyone's setup, but perhaps I missed the one that you think might work for us. Can anyone help me out here with a few ideas for a new setup?

Thank you!

Re: Need help with cage setup

Ok, here is what I'm thinking...I will build them each a 2x4 cage. One will be on top of the other, but in an L-shape so that they should still be able to see each other a little I think. How does that sound?

Does anyone have any input on this subject?

How about making an L shape in one level so that it can fit in a corner.

Re: Need help with cage setup

Thanks for the reply starshine123102!

We had thought about that, but there is just not enough room for that big of a cage...even if they were only 2x3. That is a great idea adding the picture though. I worried that no one would have any idea what I am talking about!

Here is what I'm thinking for the corner of the room. (Sorry for the crude sketch.) Do you think this is good enough to keep them apart yet keep them from getting lonely?

Re: Need help with cage setup

So one 2x4 is on top of the other 2x4 and overlap in a 2x2 corner?

How would you support the overhang of the second floor?

I think thats what those lines are starshine. All you would need to do to support it would be to make a grid base, then you would have a place for storage as well.

Re: Need help with cage setup

Yes, I used grids to make a support for the overhanging edge. I spent the afternoon making the cages, and all I have left to make are a couple of hay racks. When I'm finished I'll post a picture so you can all see how it looks. I think it turned out pretty good, and it definitely helped us save some space, but also gives each little guy a 2x4 cage for plenty of playing.

Thanks for your help!

Re: Need help with cage setup

Another thing you could try would be to stack two 2x4's and make a ramp between the levels, but then block off the entrance to the ramp in one of the cages so that they could meet at either the top or the bottom of the ramp but not get into each other's cages. (I hope that makes sense.)

Re: Need help with cage setup

Thanks for the idea DC Piggies. I had thought about that too but didn't know if the ramp would take up too much floor space.

Also, I finished the cage a little while ago and I'm pretty sure my wife would kill me if I "redesigned" the cage again. We'll leave it in the L-shape for now and see how that works.

Thanks!

Ok, here is the finished product if anyone cares to see! The boys seem to like it, so we're happy.

Agreed! I might try something like that when I finally find (grumble) another guinea pig, except I'll attach them with a wooden plank. It would fit our space nicely and it looks quite easy to clean. Great job!
