I just adopted a 3 year old male guinea pig named Gizmo from the shelter. I built a cage out of the cubes, but I do not have coroplast. I put a piece of plywood on the bottom and placed fleece on top of that. Will that be OK? Also, the fleece works great. |

No plywood will absorb the urine and carry bactieria. You should put a shower curtain (which I have) or you could use linolium(sp?) tiles or even garbage bags! As for the bedding, you shouldn't use fleece alone. You should have towels or puppy pads or any number of things under it to absord the pee. |

So, no on the plywood even with puppy pads or shower curtain or towels? Looks like coroplast is in the near future. Gizmo loves how big his cage is and I'm so glad I found this site. |

If it's on your floor, I would just use a shower curtain or the trash bags, then use the absorbent underbedding mentioned, such as mattress pads, comforters or towels, and then top it with the fleece. If the cage is raised and you have the grids along the bottom to support the cage floor, I would really recommend getting the coroplast (campaign signs are so great for this, really) as soon as you can, or use linoleum... the sheets work better. I had a heckuva time with the tiles trying to create a waterproof bottom. In the meantime, If you go ahead with using the plywood because of your cage being raised up, make sure you put a waterproof layer on top of the plywood. |
