Cost of a 2x4

Does anyone know the average cost of a 2x4 cage?
Someone I know, knows a school that is planning on getting two guinea pigs to teach kids responsiblity and care - I know it's very very annoying and irresponsible . I am trying to gather as much information to send to the school as possible, and would like to give them a price on how much it would cost to build a 2x4 for two pigs.

I know pack of Robert May cubes are £22 I think but they have a minimum order thing, so they would have to buy 2 packs...I need it to sound cheap and attractive basically so these pigs dont end up in some decreped cage/hutch.

Oh and also any information on how much it is to fleece and towel 2x4's would be useful too.

Thanks

I'm in the UK by the way.

Re: Cost of a 2x4

I don't know about the UK, but I will tell you what I usually spend on cubes, coroplast (recent purchase) and fleece or flannel.

Cubes can be found locally, here, so.. $14 is average cost for a box of 20 grids, I believe (20 something, anyhow).

Coroplast was $22 for any color 4' x 8' piece. (This is MORE than enough for a 2 x 4 C'nC)

Fleece is usually regularly priced at $5 -$6/yard (of 55" or wider) around here, but I look for sales all the time, so I can find it for half that (if I'm not REALLY picky about pattern and colors, etc.) .

And now... seeing that you are in the UK and I am in the US, California, specifically ...I suppose you could convert currency or something and get a broad idea of cost.

Also, if you have a similar thing to The Freecycle Network over there, then you may be able to find things for free. I recently got a set of 39 grids (for cubes) and 2 sets of flannel sheets (the whole set for each.. flat, fitted and sham) for free!! (I already had 2 boxes of cubes here, so now I can make C'nC cages for the rattie boys, too!)

Re: Cost of a 2x4

A box of cube grids here is $14.99 at Target ($12.99 if on sale) and coroplast any color is $12. So technically you could build a 2 x 4 for less than $30.

Fleece here is $6-7 per yard and you would need no more than 2 yards, so $12-14 for fleece times 2 for a two complete cage changes, so $24-26 to start for fleece.

Mattress pads, blankets, and towels I always get at Goodwill or another thrift store and usually I am able to get enough for two complete cage changes for less than $20.

So $75 tops probably for the cage and bedding to use.

This weekend, I built a 5 level completely enclosed 2 x 6 cage for 12 piggies and the total cost for coroplast, grids and zip ties was about $170, which is probably less than you would pay for some overpriced and still too small cage at a pet store.

Re: Cost of a 2x4

Hi, I am new to the sight and can't figure out how to post a new thread! I am hoping someone can help me with that and a few other questions!

I would like to build a 2 x 4 cage.

I didn't see detailed instructions (just the one picture) on how to measure for the coroplast and how to go about cutting/scoring it to make the corners.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you!
Christine

You can find the measurements needed http://www.guineapigcages.com/howto.htm. As far as making a new post, get out of this thread and go to the sub-forum you want (i.e. "About Cages" sub-forum). There will be a list of different threads and at the top of them on the left there will be a button that says "New Thread." Click that, make a subject line, then type to your lil hearts content.
