Question Cage Question

Would it make any difference between a grid cage and a petstore cage if the petstore cage was big enough? I have brought a big petstore cage which is 27x56 inches on the inside for my three girls but I just wanted to know if it made any difference. I needed a cage that was 'big strong dog who loves to eat rodents' proof and I didn't think the c&c cages would be strong enough even with a lid as it would be on the floor for a while.

Sorry if this is a silly question.

Re: Cage Question

C&C cages are suprisingly strong. The corflute bases helps reinforce the sides combined with using a mixture of connectors and cable tyres and you are half way there. This link http://www.guineapigcages.com/safety.htm has some info on making your cage dog/cat proof.

As for your question, no it doesnt matter so long as the petstore cage meets the standards. However you are really pushing it by housing 3 sows in a cage of those dimentions, unless they get along extremely well.

Re: Cage Question

The packaging of the cubes I buy say that each shelf can hold up to 50lbs. With a combination of included connectors and zip-ties it should be relatively strong.

Re: Cage Question

Pet store cages are not that sturdy though. I wouldn't leave one on the floor at first either if you have big dogs.

You can reinforce the C&C cages.

Re: Cage Question

That cage is around 10.5 sq ft and really isn't large enough for 3 pigs. Where are you taking the measurements from? Most manufacturers measure the top or around the sides. The most accurate measurement would be the inside of the very bottom of the tray.

Re: Cage Question

The inside is 27 by 56 inches so that is the minimum for 3 sows. But they do get on well and I will be adding a second level soon. Oh and don't worry, the cage is REALLY strong as it locks together. It isnt an ordinary pet store cage and it is really high as well. I may add a picture so you can see.

Re: Cage Question

I only use zip ties in constructing my cage and I have a 45 pound brick in it.

Even if you have the cage on the floor, once you have it assembled and have the lid on it (which I used wire shelving) it should be quite sturdy and dog proof. The best part is you can always make it bigger, add levels or change the shape. With a pet store cage, that's it, you're done.
