    Pet-safe dyes?

Are the colored fiddle-sticks safe for guinea pigs? I can't seem to find the natural ones anywhere locally.

What about the dyes on the "Super Pet Pop-up Houses" such as these: Pop It Up Houses - For Hamsters Gerbils & Guines Pigs - SHOP.COM

It seems like it would be a bad idea to give them something dyed to chew on.

How about the Snak Shaks? These are made with Alfalfa and Honey. I know the honey is generally bad (as in "junk food") but it seems like they would probably only eat a tiny bit at a time.

If these aren't safe, are there hidey houses that are good for guinea pigs other than pigloos? We're using a cardboard box at the moment (plain, undyed, no tape).

What would make a good, inexpensive holiday gift for a guinea pig?

No on the Snak Shaks. They aren't good for pigs.

There are many things you can make your own hidey houses from. Plastic shoe boxes or other small plastic containers make good houses, just cut a hole for a door in them. The sterlite containers that have small holes in them on all sides make great houses. They are about $2 each at Wal-Mart for the piggie sized ones and you can cut a door in one end or doors in both ends. I use these myself for my pigs and rats and they are much cheaper than buying pigloos.

Large salad bowls with a door cut into them are great too. If you have Dollar stores in your area, you can find tons of useful items to make hideys out of.

I've mentioned this before, but my pigs go bonkers for oatmeal cannisters. Peel off the label and the plastic ring that holds it rigid at the top and cut out the bottom of the cannister and you have instant hidey. If you don't eat oatmeal, you can make cookies and send them to me. The recipe is usually on the label.

I wouldn't waste your money on the Snak Shaks. I bought the two "logs" for my guys and they didn't go in them or hardly chew them. Plus when I realized they were basically junk food, I ended up throwing them out.

Stick to your cardboard boxes, rolls, and yes the oatmeal containers. Visit your dollar stores and use your imagination!
