Re: Question about cages...

Umm, Many petstores sell Oxbow. But I am sure Petco does not. I think you should search the GL forums they have a thread about all the types of pellets, I shall go look for it.

Re: Question about cages...

Get a pellet that is made from Timothy not Alfalfa. Mazuri sells a decent pellet just make sure that it does not have any little bits or seeds in it.

Decent for a pet store that it.

Re: Question about cages...

I order Oxbox food and hay online and honestly, even with shipping, it works out much cheaper then the store brands. I buy directly from Oxbow at Oxbow Pet Products | Welcome

Dump the pellets with the colored bit as soon as you can.

Many petstore GPs have never seen veggies in their lives and don't know what to do with them. Some are even frightened of them. keep offering good veggies. To help show her they are yummy give her some veggies, put your face down at her level and munch on the same veggies. This method has worked for others. Here is a good veggie list http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/...tml#post254730

You can also get vit C tablets from Oxbow that are way better then the drops. I won't reiterate why not to use the drops since you already read that info.

Re: Question about cages...

I read the post by vinci that had a very similar situation with his pig Shake Shake...it's so sad.

I want to get Shelby back from Petco and take care of her myself. But for the time being, I'm going to call them and bother the shit out of them until they can tell me she's okay.

But now I'm worried about any other possible sicknesses she could have. Like mites or worms

Re: Question about cages...

From my experiance, KM has the BEST hay! Kaytee will do, but a lot of the time it is dusty and brown.

I save so much money from buying from KM. I get 50lbs of pellets with shipping for $50 which = $1 pound. Much cheaper than the crap they sell at the pet store. THe hay is the same. 50 lbs for $50.

Not only do I save a ton of money, the quality is untouchable.

Kaytee Tim Hay is okay. If you manage to find and buy Oxbow or KMs though you will see the difference in quality.

Call Feedstores in your area and see if they carry Oxbow. Also call and ask at Exotic Vets as some vets carry it as well. Oxbow also has a store locator but it isn't up to date.

Re: Question about cages...

Ive looked up exotic pets before, I know there are some around here.

How much would a check up be if I just took Layla in? I'm sure it varies, but I'm just wondering in what ballpark

sorry i have so many questions, you guys are helpful!

Re: Question about cages...

Please do not call your self a bad mommy coming here and admiting your wrong is showing that you really want to help your piggies and care for them in the best way possible. So in my opinion you are a excellent mommy.

It would be maybe $30-60. Depending on your vet.

Re: Question about cages...

You are not a bad mommy because you are open minded and willing to learn!

The colored bits are not healthy and can be choking hazards, as well as seeds.

thanks littlebear

AND the boyfriend and I are definitely looking into building a huge two-level cage. It was intended for Layla and a new sister for her, but I don't know what's gonna happen for now.

As far as adoption, where should I look? Do just regular animal shelters carry guinea pigs? I know they have rabbits.

Re: Question about cages...

Try Petfinder.com: Adopt a pet and help an animal shelter rescue a puppy or kitten. for starters. You can also ask your vet if they know of any adoptables too.

Re: Question about cages...

$30-60 is for the vets time to look at her. If the vet does anything else it adds to the cost. And most humane societys have guineas and rabbits. But some don't you may want to look into finding a rescue.

Re: Question about cages...

thanks so much, guys! im very familiar with petfinder. thats how my mom found our basset hound, Winston.

another question!
I trim her nails regularly, but every time, they slightly curl a bit. Should I be worried about this? I always cut them as low as I can without hitting her skin or anything that would cause her to bleed, but then when they start growing again, theyre slightly curled.

Re: Question about cages...

I try to trim my boys every three weeks or so. I do not like to cut too close just in case. As long as you keep them trimmed and they are not curling into her foot she should be good.

Re: Question about cages...

Thats a serious problem if they curl and she walks on them it can cause pain, I would consider getting a box of QuickStop because you may need to trim her nails down even more to stop this. Its going to bleed and shes going to hate you for a while but if you put Quick Stop you should be fine.
