Under Bed Storage Crates

Hi, I was wondering if an under bed storage crate would make a good cage base?

Re: Under Bed Storage Crates

If you are talking about using it for your base to hold the shavings or other bedding material then no it would not be a good idea. They are too small in size to properly house a GP in. If you wanted to use it as a hay area/kitchen to keep things clean then it would work for that.

If you are looking for something to use other than coroplast for the bottom of your cage there are other alternatives such as lineoleum (sp?), shower curtin liner or a tarp.

Re: Under Bed Storage Crates

Thanks, I was planning on getting more than one and connecting them by fiddlestick bridges but now i think i will go with the shelf cage, I am going to try and make my three boars a double decker shelf cage.

Re: Under Bed Storage Crates

I'm not sure what you mean exactly by 'shelf cage' but I suspect you mean a bookcase? There are a few things you might want to take into consideration first. You will still need something to line the cage with, like a coroplast tray or linoleum. Also, for three boars the minimum size is 10.5 square feet all on one level, but larger, at least 13 sq. feet is recommended. So that means just the first level would have to be that big, any additional levels are just bonus.

If you need any help finding materials, there is a UK section to the forum where UK members might help you locate the cage building materials - it is more difficult to find them outside of the US. I think Argos or Bunnings or something like that sells cubes? And coroplast is often called correx or corflute.

Good luck!

Re: Under Bed Storage Crates

If the bookshelf was big enough it'd work, but I agree you'd need something waterproof to line it with.
Argos used to have cubes - got mine reduced at £7.99! However VERY annoyingly they don't stock them anymore They were a main chain and very easy to get to for most people! When I was asking about "coroplast" I called it correx and they knew what it was. This thread has a lists of places with cubes in UK: http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/...-cubes-uk.html if you were stuck on how to get materials.

Shelf as in grid cubes? I found some at B&Q, and I got my correx from e-bay. This link may be of help:

Re: Under Bed Storage Crates

I was wondering about using the rubbermaid under the bed storage containers as the bottom and making little ramps that went from area to area? I would do the math but I was thinking of getting 3-4 of them then putting the cubes around it. here is a link to the storage containers so you can see what I am talking about. The one place close to me that I found that sells coroplast is open 9-4:30 weekdays and thats it.

Christmas and Holiday Organization

the dimensions are: 42.9x19.4x6.5in

there is a larger tote too:

Christmas and Holiday Organization

39.1x16.5x9.3in

I just thought of this after reading this post and thought I'd post my ideas.

Re: Under Bed Storage Crates

rubbermaid type containers can be used to make nice sleeping and eating areas, and litter pans.... the problem with them as an entire cage, even with several put together, is they don't provide a large open floor space for the pigs to run laps without obstacles in the way.

Re: Under Bed Storage Crates

By the time you put storage boxes together, you end up with a mess and a pain in the neck of a cage. Go with the coro. Do it right the first time. You will be happier.
