Question Using Fleece with a C&C

For Christmas I got my 3 boars a cavy cage from here. I want to use fleece because it would help with costs. I think my new baby agouti boar is allergic to shavings...whenever he is around my aspen shaving he sneezes but the moment I take him out of the piggie room he quites.....(he is new and in a smaller cage in quarentine for 2 more weeks)

Anyways...my cage I ordered has chloroplast...how do you use fleece with it?

My home-made cage is on the floor and I layer newspaper, the towels and then the fleece and wrap the fleece up the sides of the playpen to make it more cozy for them and keep them from tunneling under the fleece.

So I am assuming I would use the same idea but pin the fleece around the chloroplast?

Also my mom who lives away from me suggested instead of towels maybe using the pads that you can get at home-med places that you place under bed ridden people that soak up "fluids" and that it would hold the smell better.(like puppy pads)....do you think this would work to put in the choloroplast and then fleece on top?

Thanks in advance!

I have read this..... so I am assuming the "human puppy pads" + towels + fleece would be the best combo. So now how do I put it in my chloroplast once my cage is delivered?

Re: Using Fleece with a C&C

You can layer it just like you have in your picture. Place your bottom layer (i.e. the puppy pads) then the towels then place your fleece over it all. The extra sides to the fleece can then be wrapped up over your sides of coroplast. If you take a look at the gallery you will see lots of different cages with fleece and that should give you some guidence. Also if you do a forum search for fleece you will get lots of helpful information.

Hope that this helps.

Re: Using Fleece with a C&C

I don't know if you can tell much by this pic or not, but you lay all your layers in the bottom of the coro, and then you pull your fleece up over the edges of your coroplast and clip it down. You can use bag clips, binder clips, or plain clothes pins like I am using.
I actually wound up cutting my coroplast sides down to about 2" tall so I could easily pull the fleece over the sides AND tuck it under the coroplast. You can see in the 2nd pic how I have it tucked under the coro on my 3rd level. Tucking it under keeps my burrowers from getting under the fleece and from it shifting around too much. I just use the clothes pins as an extra measure to keep my vacuum from sucking to the fleece. It keeps it pulled nice and tight between cleanings so I dont have poo's getting under creases and folds.

Excuse the boars' mess , they are confused. They sleep in their shavings/kitchen upstairs, and they drag their veggies and fruit down to the fleece to eat. Silly mongrels.

Re: Using Fleece with a C&C

I'm a firm supporter of the Cavy Cages style of using coroplast. (not chloroplast by the way) and she has given us very detailed instructions right here on this site, with pics and everything.

I just followed her directions. Not having sides on the coroplast means having hay and poops flying everywhere...too messy for me. Especially since I use fleece. She spent a lot of time assembling the instructions
http://www.guineapigcages.com/howto.htm

My fleece problems were many until I figured out that you can sew string sized pieces of fleece onto the sides of the fleece (like a chairpad) and then just poke tiny holes into the part of the coroplast where it bends at the cage floor. Then you push the string sized through and tie them to the cube grids on the bottom, side of the cage floor. Takes a split second and makes a perfect solution to holding down the whole enchilada.

You don't even need a sewing machine...

Smart mom! Yes, many people use these and prefer them. Most folks like to get 'used' ones as they are expensive. I think there is a person on ebay who sells used ones for pet use.
