Coroplast, biting

Due to my cage design there is a change my guinea will be able to nibble at the coroplast, do i have to redesign my cage to prevent this, or is this ok?

Re: Coroplast, biting

I would wait and see if your pigs will chew on the coroplast. When my pigs were first exposed to it, they chewed it out of curiosity. As soon as they realized that the coroplast wasn't very tasty, they no longer nibbled on it.

Re: Coroplast, biting

I have a piggy that thinks it's grand to give a chew on *everything* that is new in his cage. And yes... he had to try out the coroplast when we build our first C&C cage, but hasn't touched it since.

We have coroplast in many different sizing throughout the cage. We even use the coroplast to cover the grids that we use from ramps.

I have never had many chewing problems with the piggies.

I think all will go well with your piggies.

Good Luck, and keep us posted, K?

Re: Coroplast, biting

Bromers was chewing at first but I think it was justa new thing so he had to have a nibble. I would'nt worry about it because if your making a typical cc cage it is going to take awhile for you guinea to chew enough off to cause any serious damage.

Re: Coroplast, biting

Some of my piggies have wrecked the cage by biting the coroplast side right down to the bottom causing the shavings to keep falling out. Its probably time I replaced it.

Re: Coroplast, biting

Ok, I have a question. I now have a male cavy and his cage is next to my girls. He is so aggressively chewing on the coroplast that it is causing him to bleed some. I'm moving his cage as soon as I can, but should I just put some cardboard between him and the coroplast? I was hoping they would do fine next to each other. My sister said he chewed alot at her house also. I'm just worried about him hurting his mouth or worse. I don't know what to do. I don't really have another location for him at this time.

Re: Coroplast, biting

My piggies used to chew on their coroplast too until I switched to fleece. The flieece is folded over the sides of the coroplast and pinched with those office clip things so now they can't get to it to chew it anymore. It might work for you.

Re: Coroplast, biting

Thanks, I'm going to put some in there today then, as soon as I get off from work. I panicked this morning, I looked in at him and thought it was a tooth that came out from chewing so much!! But, it was a piece of apple. I might have overreacted some.. ha ha. I just worry about them.

Re: Coroplast, biting

I've heard of people putting binder edges on the top of the coroplast because the piggies can't bite through it... also bitter apple spray? Something like that. You may want to do a search for both on the site.

Re: Coroplast, biting

Sounds like you have a very lonely guy in that cage, and he needs a buddy.

All is not well, otherwise he would not be chewing with such vigor.

Have you thought about getting him neutered and then placing him in with the girls?

Re: Coroplast, biting

Yeah, as soon as i am able to find a qualified vet, he's getting the snip and they are getting a huge cage. But until then, I want him happy and healthy. Ly said he's always been a loner, but I think he really wants the girls now.

Re: Coroplast, biting

Hmmmm, that's strange Lisa. Wheeky never bit or chewed his coroplast when my parents had him. I wonder if maybe it has to do with the girls. I mean you had them all in the same car on the ride home although in separate carriers. Maybe he smelled them and hasn't been the same since.

Re: Coroplast, biting

Yep, it's those girls... Us ladies have strange affects on men.
He's wanting to "buddy up" to them. LOL

Hopefully you can find a great vet and get Mr. Wheeky put in neutral gear, and then he *can* have friends. I am willing to BET the chewing stops.

First of all, having him "put in neutral" is one of the funniest things I've ever heard in regards to having a boar neutered. I won't even tell you what my brother said when I had Percy snipped, but keep in mind that he's a Marine, so it was vulgar. One of the girls must have been in heat a couple days ago though, because Mr. P was going absolutely crazy in his downstairs cage. He and the girls have taken to wheeking up and down the staircase to each other. It's sweet, but quite sad at the same time. The girls' quarantine is over in about a week, so I'm thinking about taking P upstairs and letting them talk in the same room to maybe ease some of the tension.
