It finally Happened...

It was inevitable really, it comes to us all, had to remodel the cage! Have been thinking about it for a while now and managed to sneak some more girds out of my mum's wardrobe. Took a long time, 200 zip ties, about 6 hands and a lot of sweat!

The girls seem to like the final result, what do you lot think?

Re: It finally Happened...

ooooh, I'm jealous . Although considering the acrobatics that went into building my current one, I might have to work up the energy for a remodel.

What kind of material is that lining the cage, and how easy is it to clean? It looks kind of like AstroTurf...very cool. I like how you did the opening for the ramp.

Re: It finally Happened...

The top level is really short pile carpet tile, it worked well in their last loft as it can easily be swept. The bottom level is fleece and towel. There are very good at using the litter box, might have to get a new one for the upper level now too though.

What really spurred on the change was the fact I have two caves coming from Ly and I had to make room for them!

Thanks for your compliaments, makes all the awkward positions I had to get myself into during construction worthwhile!

I really like how you engineered the ramp & that nice, big door on the front.

Re: It finally Happened...

Well you caught the bug. Welcome to the group. I was just given more grids and now I'm trying to think how to put them to good use. I may connect by 2x3 & 2x2 which both are on the 2nd level and each has its own ramp. Hmmmm????

Re: It finally Happened...

I can definitely relate to the weird contortions part...at one point the veeerrrry back connector popped off when I was pushing the cage against the wall and I had to just about do a handstand to get back there and reconnect it. Ah, the things we do for piggies.

Re: It finally Happened...

Wow, I love it! Love the 2nd floor Do you lift the whole thing up for cleaning? (scratches head & starts taking notes) And I LOVE how it looks without the connectors! I'm gonna have to show my husband that. It looks so much better than ours with the polka-dots sticking out all over the place!

Your piggies are so lucky!

Re: It finally Happened...

I never really had much faith in the connectors, I used to use the grids as shelves and they were always popping off, I could never get all the corners in the connectors at the same time. As for cleaning, I did a poop scoop last night and it is actually vey easy to sweep out the bottom level using a dustpan and brush. When it came to changing the fleece I had to stick my whole head and sholders in to lay it down flat at the back, not as easy as when it was open but I think the sacrifice is worth it!

Re: It finally Happened...

Hmmm, I've never had that problem with the connectors... but we clicked them into place with a pliers. But I LOVE how yours looks, and I can imagine that it would be much more secure this way. My husband took a look at your cage last night & said "It looks so... professional!"

I can just imagine you all but crawling into the cage to lay the fleece flat... I think only someone here would do something like that for their piggies And yes, I think your happy little piggies prove that it is worth it!

I had to laugh a bit, now my caves are inspiring members to make larger cages! The flannel/fleece combo I picked out will work so well with both the fleece you have and the carpet tile. I am sending you a pm too Pinny, so check your pm box.
