Rats can live in huge same sex colonies. As long as you have the cage space for them all to live together, there's no problem. If not, then they could be split into smaller groups. Rats are probably more social than pigs and do well in colonies. I had 4 males living together in the top half of an FN 142 at one time and they all got on well.
