I haven't had hamsters in awhile, but I just looked at my "pet shop cage" that I use for quarantine (I have 4 of the darn things) that most new piggie owners who buy from pet shops are told to get and I think that hamsters can get out. Basically - anything they can get there head thru, they can squeeze the rest out. I wouldn't use the wire ones marketed for bunnies/chinchillas/piggies. You don't need to be chasing escaped hammies all over the place!
