Males can fight during adolescence (around 6 months, I believe) so two of the same age can be problematic, but an older one could work well for you. I am partial to the M/F combination but my boars have always been neutered.
Shelters don’t typically spay or neuter
GPs so I would definitely question how the shelter came to that determination.
