I don't mind the notion of chatspeak in some places (like text messages), but I think it should be banned for all people under 20- even in texts, IMs and the like. America's teenagers are spending so much time using that crap that as a result their written language skills are dreadful. They often don't even know the difference between 'our' and 'are' because everything is 'r', and don't realize that 'nite' isn't a word. The grammar and spelling skills of some teens and young adults is enough to make you want to weep. I don't expect people to follow some of the more obscure grammatical conventions but geez, if it's a plural then there's no apostrophe before the 's'!!!
If English is your first langauge, and you went to elementary school in the US, then there's no excuse for:
"Your a cool person"
"I'm going too the store"
"My fish ate it's dinner" |
