You want to know something funny? I wound up reading a site where a lot of British kids were using chatspeak. And some chatspeak only makes sense if you speak the dialect it comes from. They were typing "4t" and I couldn't figure it out--then I realized that since they were pronouncing "thought" as "fort" it made a lot of sense to them to spell it 4t. But I'm an American, and it had me completely confused.

Did you know, in China, they have only one writing system for the bazillions of different dialects? Mandarin sounds very different from Cantonese, but they can communicate because they have a common writing system.
