The stores near me are out of zip ties at this moment, so I am temporarily using twist ties. If you have kids or friends with kids, you may have noticed the dozens of clear-plastic-coated twist tie wires that are used to tie toys into their boxes. Some of these are quite long and thick and work well if wrapped multiple times. Ordinary trash bag twist ties will break.
