You don't have to cut at all if you don't want to/can't. You can bend it into a U-shape if it's going in the middle of your cage, or an L-shape if it's going against a wall. Alternately, you can use two L-shaped grids zip-tied together to form a square-ish U.

You just have to bend them on the sides that do not have a little crease on the outside (thicker) edge.

Or, if you do need to cut the grids to achieve what you want, you should file them down with a metal file until they are smooth...

In either case, make sure you cover the ground they walk on.

Example: when I had a second level, I had L-shaped grids next to a grid wall that was there to support the second level, so there was no place to fall off. I had coroplast along the ramp with little traction steps taped to it, and then covered the whole ramp, including the "safety" wall, with fleece.
