Actually Chlorhexidine is very safe. It is used in hospitals for disinfecting. Doctors use it for all types of applications - cleaning hands before operating, cleaning the skin for an incision etc... It is also used in several oral applications for different mouth issues/infections. It is also the main ingredient in my dog's prescription shampoo because it helps fight fungus (which is something poor Montana struggles with). We basically use it for everything. I always make sure the cage is completely wiped out and dry though before adding the aspen back in just to be safe.
