The Four-Legged Victims of Foreclosure

Deserted pets also foreclosure victims - USATODAY.com

People are leaving behind their pets when the banks foreclose and they are forced out. It just makes me sick and angry to think they can't be bothered to take the pet to a shelter where if it doesn't get adopted it can have a painless death rather than slowly starving to death. They're finding animals who have scratched and bitten doors in attempts to get out, and eaten materials in the house just to stay alive. I also discovered that in California the pets are considered the houseowner's personal property and cannot be removed for fifteen days. Realtors and rescues have to bring them food and water there and hope for the best. I can't believe in this day and age in a state known to be pretty liberal that animal law lags so far behind that abandoned pets are considered no better than a left-behind couch.
