This may be a prretty stupid question, but are hearts of romaine just as good as romaine lettuce?

I give my boys red leaf lettuce, but as we're on a tight budget the next week or so- would hearts of romaine be okay? Personally, I've stayed away from it because the outer leaves are just so much leafier and I know I'd prefer to eat leafier lettuce. However, I promised my husband I'd ask since he points it out at Costco every time we go. Tight budget or not, they'll continue being fed red leaf or green leaf if hearts of romaine isn't nutritional enough for them.
