I got my 2 boys in spring of 2005 from a family that no longer had time for them. They were free with a large Marchioro cage. I was told they were females (incorrectly)and about a year and half old.
They had what I thought was a pretty good life-timothy hay daily, plain pelleted food, lots of carrots, kiln dried pine for bedding, 2 Pigloos. The cage seemed ok, they got occasional lap and floor time, and did well with nail trimming and baths. I became concerned early this year when Scotchie was doing a lot of mounting on Reese, causing him to hide alot and lose his hair on his backside. I also thought maybe that the cage wasn't big enough so I googled guinea pigs in February and came upon this site.
What an eye opening experience! I read everything on the forums. A month later, the boys had a C & C alternative cage with fleece and towel bedding, were being fed a little variety of veggies and were much happier with all the room. Reese's hair grew back in, and Scotchie no longer mounted him. By early summer, I had switched to Oxbow pellets and hay and built a 2 x 5 cage.
Now, we have decided to adopt 2 more boys to add to the excitement! We will probably get them in December, as we have to fill out the paperwork and decide between what bonded pairs are left. They will be adopted from the Ohio
Cavy Rescue in Mogadore, Ohio.
My boys are are so much loved. Thanks to this site, I have learned more about their care and behavior to enable them to live a long, healthy and happy life
