The idea is to sacrifice the few for the greater good. If you buy guinea pigs from pet stores and breeders (pigs in stores come from breeders, btw), you are contributing to the problems of overpopulation as well as the constant forced breeding the sows must go through over and over again to satisfy the demand for more guinea pigs to sale to the public.
Of course piggies in pet stores need love too, but it's important to resist the temptation to buy one because as soon as you do, another will take its place, continuing the cycle.
