I just mentioned in a post last night, about my pigs doing this.
I couldn't find any descent pellets in the stores here, so I ditched the crapty pellets and just quit feeding pellets at all for a while. When I ordered hay I went ahead and ordered km pellets as well, but they are only minutely eating them.
When I was buying the junk pellets, they would clean the bowls out, but honestly I think that is
because they were junk. They like KM pellets, but they just don't binge feed on them because they aren't packed full of sugars, corn products, etc. That, and since ordering the km hay they have doubled their hay intake--7 pigs completely wipe out 4 hay racks per day (bent grids
stuffed full).
I am still putting about 1/2 cup of pellets in each cage, but half or more of them go to waste, and once this bag is finished I doubt I will reorder them--that is just more money I can use for hay.
I would also suggest though, that you increase your veggie variety.
Currently I give my pigs leaf lettuce, cilantro, baby carrots, red and green peppers every day. Apple every other day. And then there are always 2 or 3 other things thrown in, that I change up from week to week. This week it has been corn husks and silks, a few pieces of cabbage, green beans, and tomato.
If your schedule is making it difficult to offer variety, what you might try is buying a box of cheap sandwhich bags (walmart sells like 50 bags for 1.00) or some of the Glad reuseable/throw away bowls. On Saturdays buy your veggie variety, do all your cutting and slicing, and pack bags or bowls with a salad for each day of the week. This way all you have to do is snatch it out of the fridge and dump it in. Takes you 30 seconds, and the pigs get a good variety.
