I'm so sorry to hear about that happening to your little pig. My chinchilla just died the other day from the same thing. I think that if they turn their heads sideways, they can fit through. I know how you feel. The grid in my cage was a little bigger than 1 inch. I put chicken wire around the outside of my pigs cage because I don't want the same thing to happen to her. Also, I made sure not to leave anyhting that can be bitten outside of the cage. I'm so sorry for your loss.
