A lot of people adore having two levels on their cage. Personally, I'm only building 1 on the cage I'm currently working on. If you make the second level the same exact size as the first, you're correct, the bottom would be dark. Quite a few people just make a loft or smaller size level on top of the first. For example, I'm building a 2X6 cage. To avoid the bottom being dark, I could put a U-shaped upper level on the top, a 1X6 level across the back, or a small loft level on either one or both sides.
